Being Global with a Local Mindset
|
For the sake of this discussion, assume that you are involved with internet radio or that you are an independent artist. You want to monetize audio content in programmed form or as a song.
Generally speaking, the objective is to make your name a first choice for people when they consume audio.

"Consider that today a person in Pretoria is as close as one in Peoria; either can buy your song or client's product online."

You define "who" is in your market - that is, the type of person you are targeting. Yet how much thought is given to where your consumer lives?
This is about independent artists AND radio stations. Both worlds have opened to global proportions.
Contemplating there may be a sale in Australia, Germany, or Britain is a foreign thought for most internet radio stations and artists.
Considering
where your consumer comes from is a major shift brought on by the digital age. To operate in this new world requires a "global village" mindset.
The essence of marketing is making your product or service top-of-mind to as many people as possible. With digital's reach, the percentage of people coming from "local" (let's say a 75-mile radius of your location) is dwindling.
Use these figures as guidance. In the last 30 days 53.8% of Audio Graphics'
RadioRow visitors were from outside the United States. As a conduit to radio stations online, RadioRow has visitors disbursed to a couple thousand select web sites from around the world.
For indie artists, AG's
RRadio Music served 23.6% from outside the U.S.
30% of sales over the last 30 days were from outside the U.S.
Internet radio stations
must run campaigns for companies with online sales and distribution. They have a global market waiting to be tapped.
Indie artists have a
potential fan base far over that which was available to previous generations of musicians.
Consider that today a person in Pretoria is as close as one in Peoria; either can buy your song or client's product online.
The
local mindset of yesterday needs to adjust. Potential advertisers and fans are located around the world, with the internet giving access as never before - pursue it!
Today's indie artist introduction to internet radio is...
We listen for songs that evoke emotion; fast, slow, female, male, group, it doesn't matter. When an artist has the power to please, they should be given a chance to be heard.
Give Fiona (Miss 2.1)'s "Boy Toy a listen.
Add it to your station playlist, free! Such is the new world of music distribution.
It's time internet radio programmers take a chance and reach into a huge pile of talent.
It is there that new hit songs will increasingly be found.
